Private Jet to the Super Bowl: Avoid the Crowds, Arrive in Style
The Event
The Super Bowl is the most-watched sporting event in the United States, drawing over 100 million viewers and roughly 70,000 in-stadium attendees. But the game itself is only the centerpiece of a week-long calendar that includes corporate hospitality events, celebrity parties, the NFL Experience fan festival, and business networking that rivals any industry conference.
The host city rotates annually, and each location presents unique logistical challenges for private aviation. Recent and upcoming host cities include Miami, Los Angeles, Phoenix, New Orleans, and Las Vegas — all major markets with robust but capacity-constrained private aviation infrastructure.
What makes the Super Bowl uniquely challenging for charter logistics is the concentration: virtually all arrivals happen within a 48-hour window (Friday and Saturday), and virtually all departures happen within 6 hours of the final whistle on Sunday night.
Getting There by Private Jet
Super Bowl host cities typically designate specific airports for private aviation overflow:
- Las Vegas (2024 example) — Henderson Executive (HND) and North Las Vegas (VGT) handled overflow from Las Vegas Harry Reid (LAS). FBOs at all three airports implemented extended hours and surge staffing.
- Phoenix/Glendale — Scottsdale Airport (SDL) and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway (AZA) serve as relief for Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX). SDL is the premium choice, 25 minutes from State Farm Stadium.
- New Orleans — Lakefront Airport (NEW) is the dedicated private jet facility, 15 minutes from the Superdome. Louis Armstrong (MSY) private terminal handles heavy jets.
- Miami — Opa-Locka Executive (OPF) is the primary private jet airport. Fort Lauderdale Executive (FXE) and Boca Raton (BCT) provide additional capacity.
The FAA typically imposes temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) over the stadium on game day, affecting routing and timing for arriving aircraft. Your charter operator must account for these restrictions in the flight plan.
What It Costs
Super Bowl weekend commands some of the highest charter premiums of the year. Indicative one-way pricing:
- Light jet (domestic, 2–3 hrs): $15,000 – $30,000
- Midsize jet (domestic, 3–4 hrs): $25,000 – $45,000
- Heavy jet (coast-to-coast, 5–6 hrs): $50,000 – $80,000
- VIP airliner (large groups, 20–50 pax): $100,000 – $200,000
Round-trip bookings are strongly recommended. Aircraft that arrive on Saturday without a confirmed departure booking on Sunday may be forced to reposition, leaving you without a ride home when you need it most. Group charters that fill a midsize or heavy jet across 8–14 passengers bring the per-seat cost down to $3,000–$8,000 — comparable to a first-class commercial ticket with immeasurably better timing and experience.
Timing Your Flight
Arrive no later than Saturday midday. Friday arrival is ideal for attending pre-game events and securing ground transport. By Saturday afternoon, FBO ramps are near capacity, and ground-hold delays begin stacking up.
Departure is the critical bottleneck. With the game ending around 10 PM local time, the window from 10:30 PM to 1:00 AM sees the highest density of departures at every airport in the metro area. File your departure slot in advance. If you can be flexible, a Monday morning departure avoids the crush entirely and is typically 20–30% cheaper.
